‘I gathered intelligence’: Gachagua explains why he skipped Gen Z anniversary protests

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua has explained why he kept off the second anniversary of the Gen Z protests, citing that there was a plot to trigger violence, loot businesses and blame it on the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua, in an interview with the Nation, stated that his decision to stay away from the demonstrations was made during his 45-day political hiatus at his Wamunyoro home, where he engaged various political stakeholders.

The former Deputy President was conspicuously missing as his political affiliates within the United Opposition marched on the streets of Nairobi CBD to commemorate the youth who lost their lives during the Gen Z 2024 protests.

“I had gathered intelligence from my government networks and the reality is that there were expectations that I would appear in the streets, creating an opportunity for goons and rogue security officers to cause mayhem,” Gachagua stated.

He added: “The plan was to create violence, loss of life and looting and then portray Mt Kenya as the centre of Opposition to President William Ruto’s administration. That plan suffered a setback when I advised my supporters to stay away from the streets.”

On June 23, 2026, Gachagua alleged that there was a coordinated scheme to unleash hired gangs in select counties during the protests.

“I have intelligence that Murkomen, Omollo, Kihika and others have organised goons to cause mayhem in Mt Kenya. Ksh.200 million was withdrawn today in Upperhill from the Interior account, meant to finance goons for Thursday,” he claimed.

He also alleged that the operation was coordinated by the “notorious Nairobi Sierra Squad” under Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, with DCP strongholds being specifically targeted to taint the party leadership.

“I have been informed that DCP strongholds have been targeted so that the leader can be blamed alongside leaders who support him,” he alleged.

In response, CS Murkomen ridiculed Gachagua, branding him a clout chaser who seeks to make every major national event about himself.

“Most of those things he was talking about, saying he was going to be assassinated, he’s a clout chaser, so every public event that is of great interest, he likes making it always about himself,” Murkomen stated during a press briefing on June 25, 2026.
