IGAD launches the 2nd edition of its Media Awards for 2024, aiming to recognize exceptional journalism that highlights crucial community issues.

Patience Nyange, spokesperson for the IGAD Executive Secretary, stated on Monday that IGAD acknowledges the media’s crucial role in promoting peace, stability, and development in the region. Nyange emphasized in a statement that IGAD recognizes the media’s influential role in driving positive change.

“Through the IGAD Media Awards, we aim to recognise and honour the tireless efforts of journalists who work tirelessly to inform, educate, and empower our communities,” Nyange said.

“By shining a spotlight on their work, we hope to encourage the pursuit of excellence in journalism and foster a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability,” she added.

The IGAD Media Awards 2024 aim to honor outstanding journalism across eight Member States in the IGAD region, including Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.

During the launch, IGAD reiterated its dedication to promoting press freedom and supporting journalists’ essential work in the region and beyond.

Journalists from all IGAD Member States are encouraged to submit their entries for the awards.

The entries will cover a range of categories, including Print, Radio, TV, Photography, Digital Media, Influencers, National Languages, and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
