Israeli tanks pushed deeper into eastern Rafah on Tuesday, reaching residential districts of the southern border city where over a million people had sought shelter. This raised concerns of further civilian casualties. Israel’s allies and aid groups have repeatedly cautioned against a ground incursion into Rafah, where Israel claims four Hamas battalions are stationed.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced hearings on Thursday and Friday to address a request by South Africa for new emergency measures over the Rafah incursion. South Africa accuses Israel of violating the genocide convention in Gaza, a claim Israel denies.

Israel vows to continue the operation in Rafah, citing the need to eliminate remaining Hamas fighters.

“The tanks advanced this morning west of Salahuddin Road into the Brzail and Jneina neighbourhoods. They are in the streets inside the built-up area and there are clashes,” one resident told Reuters via a chat app.

Palestinian residents reported seeing smoke and hearing explosions in western Rafah following Israeli bombardment of eastern neighborhoods.
