Japan’s National Defense Academy has released the conditions foreign nationals must meet before applying to the country’s prestigious military institution.
International applicants cannot apply independently. Their admission must first be covered by a formal agreement between Japan and their home country.
Academic and age requirements
Applicants must possess a high-school or secondary-school qualification recognized as equivalent to a Japanese high-school certificate under Japan’s School Education Law.
Candidates whose academic credentials do not meet this standard will not qualify for admission.
Age restrictions also depend on the programme selected.Foreign applicants generally need to be below 22 years old on 1 April of the year they plan to enroll.
Those applying for the Japanese-language course face a stricter requirement and must be below 21 on the same date.
Requirements for Japanese nationals
For Japanese nationals, the admissions requirements are similarly detailed. Candidates must be citizens aged between 18 and 20, though those already serving in the Japan. Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) may apply up to the age of 22. Good health and good character are also listed as conditions, alongside the completion of a recognized high-school education or its equivalent.
The entrance examination for domestic applicants involves three stages:
1. A written examination,
2. A personal interview, and
3. A physical examination.
Academy trains future officers
The National Defense Academy is located in Yokosuka in Kanagawa Prefecture. It trains future officers for Japan’s Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces.
The institution’s rules show that foreign participation depends not only on academic and age qualifications, but also on an official arrangement between Japan and the applicant’s country.
