Jim Carrey’s changing appearance: how the actor’s look has evolved over the years

Jim Carrey looks noticeably different — and the internet has a lot to say about it. After years of near-total seclusion, the Canadian-American comedian and actor stepped back into the spotlight in early 2026, sparking viral debate about why he looks different recently. Fans called him “unrecognisable,” some even questioned whether it was really him at all. So what has actually happened to Jim Carrey?

Why does Jim Carrey look different recently?

The question of what has happened to Jim Carrey’s face exploded online in early 2026. Photos and video of Carrey looking decidedly fuller and smoother in the face flooded the internet, with some commenters calling him “unrecognisable” and others making unfounded accusations that it was not Carrey at all, but a lookalike.

The César Awards appearance that started it all

The actor had been pretty reclusive in recent years, telling Access Hollywood in 2022 that he was “fairly serious” about retiring from acting, before popping back out in public in 2025 at the UK premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 — and then again at the 51st César Awards ceremony in Paris on 26 February 2026, where he accepted the Honorary César Award.

Carrey got the crème de la crème of French cinema on their feet at the ceremony, receiving the honorary award that is traditionally given to an international star. He was introduced on stage by director Michel Gondry, who had worked with him on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind over two decades earlier.

At the podium, Carrey delivered his acceptance speech entirely in French — with warmth, humour, and visible emotion. He said, in French with a thick American accent, “As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire,” and then revealed his ancestral link to France, noting that his great-great-great-great-grandfather, Marc-François Carré, had emigrated to Canada from Saint-Malo.

He signed off with typical self-deprecating charm, asking the crowd: “So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired.”

What the conspiracy theorists said

Despite Carrey attending the ceremony surrounded by his family and making a deeply personal, teary-eyed speech, clone conspiracy theories gained momentum after drag artist Alexis Stone posted on Instagram suggesting he had impersonated Carrey at the event, sharing images of prosthetics and a wig resembling the actor’s look that night.

However, Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, said Carrey’s rare appearance at the ceremony was authentic and described it as “a historic moment,” calling the outlandish rumours a “non-issue.”

What plastic surgeons think

Several cosmetic surgeons weighed in publicly, though none had treated Carrey.

Dr Millicent Rovelo, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who has not treated Carrey, reviewed photos and video from his Rock Hall appearance, as well as red-carpet appearances from 2024 and 2020. Between his Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premiere in December 2024 and November 2025, she concluded “it is clear that he has had an upper blepharoplasty” — referring to eyelid surgery.

She noted that “in the 2024 photos, he has a lot of excess skin of his upper eyelids hanging over the outer edges of the eyes,” adding that in more recent footage “you can see that the excess skin is removed, and that makes his eyes appear larger and rounder.”

A separate surgeon suggested Carrey “appears to have had an endoscopic brow lift as evidenced by his brows being higher than before,” and may also have had “some Botox injected into his forehead.”

Other analysts noted that the most obvious change between 2025 and 2026 was a more voluminous midface — particularly in his cheeks and temple area — suggesting possible use of dermal filler.

Jim Carrey has not publicly addressed or confirmed any cosmetic procedures.

What has Jim Carrey been diagnosed with?

ADHD and depression

In addition to depression, Jim Carrey was also diagnosed with ADHD — a diagnosis that often co-occurs with depression. He has been open about both conditions throughout his career.

Carrey has used his celebrity status to bring attention to ADHD and has undergone treatment since childhood. As an adult, he has channelled some of his ADHD symptoms to his advantage, becoming famous in part through his creativity and high energy as a comedian.

On depression, he has spoken candidly in interviews. In 2018, he told The Herald Sun that depression nearly caused him to leave Hollywood.

“Depression is caused by your body and your psyche becoming exhausted with who you are trying to portray in the world.”— Jim Carrey,

The Herald Sun, 2018 Carrey has also spoken about being on Prozac for a long time before choosing to come off it.

What is going on with Jim Carrey now?

Retirement and stepping back from Hollywood

In recent years, Carrey has significantly scaled back his public presence and has not taken on new roles since Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in 2024.

He told Access Hollywood in April 2022, ahead of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, “I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” though he added he may consider more projects.

He returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 anyway. In 2018, he had revealed to The Hollywood Reporter: “I just didn’t want to be in the business anymore. I didn’t like what was happening, the corporations taking over and all that.”

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction

Before the César Awards, Carrey’s most recent public appearance was in November 2025, when he inducted Soundgarden into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, speaking onstage at the ceremony on 8 November 2025.

Art and painting

Away from the camera, Carrey has devoted much of his energy to painting and sculpting — creative pursuits he has described as central to his wellbeing. He was also the subject of the Emmy-nominated documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond and has branched into writing with his novel Memoirs and Misinformation.

In a 2024 interview, Carrey reflected on identity in a way that resonated widely once his appearance sparked viral debate:

“I don’t exist, so they’re all characters that I played, including Jim Carrey… Jim Carrey was a less intentional character because I thought I was just building something that people would like but it was a character.”— Jim Carrey, 2024 interview via The Wrap

Jim Carrey’s César Awards appearance in February 2026 dominated entertainment headlines for days. His first public outing of the year became a conspiracy-fest for many social media users, who fixated on his apparent new look — with one person writing on X, “This is some Truman Show stuff.”

He attended the event with his daughter Jane, grandson Jackson, and girlfriend Mina.

The César Awards confirmed the appearance was authentic, describing it as “a historic moment” for the ceremony.

On the real estate front, Carrey had listed his Brentwood compound for $28.9 million in February 2023; after failing to sell at that price, he eventually sold it for approximately $17 million — nearly $12 million less than the original asking price.
