A section of refugees at the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana staged a protest to demand a change in diet

They demanded the diet be changed for the sake of their health.

According to police, during the protest, a section of the kitchen reception and some structures were destroyed in the November 26 incident.

Police said they are investigating the incident and cited incitement as the cause of the same.

Five refugees were arrested during the protests.

The situation calmed down as police arrived at the scene and arrested the refugees.

The refugees are managed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which is a United Nations agency mandated to aid and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, and to assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country

Meanwhile, a house was destroyed by a fire at the camp.

Police said preliminary findings had shown the fire was caused by a move by a refugee occupying the house to use it as a charging station.

The female refugee was detained for grilling.

This is after police visited the scene and established that the fire was ignited by the generator and batteries found in the house.

No injuries were reported but property of unknown value was destroyed, police said of the Wednesday incident.

Kakuma lies in the northwestern region of Turkana County and is one of the many refugee camps set up by Kenya to relocate refugees and asylum seekers mainly from Sudan and Ethiopia.

It was established in 1992 and has been controlled by the Department of Refugee Affairs since 2006 after the Kenya Refugee Act was adopted.
