Karen Nyamu turned what could have been a bruising moment into a dance floor memory after crowds heckled her off the stage at a high-profile Nairobi event.
In a viral clip, Nyamu was seen in a burgundy dress, laughing and dancing alongside a man holding a microphone on a brightly lit stage adorned with truss lighting rigs and a decorative elephant backdrop.
The joyful scene unfolded at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), with audience members capturing the moment on their phones.
What happened at the KICC event?
The nominated senator had attended an endometriosis awareness event organised by content creator Natalie Githinji at the KICC Comesa Grounds on Sunday, September 27.
When Nyamu stepped up to speak about legislative efforts and endometriosis framework policies, a section of the crowd was having none of it.
Attendees began chanting ‘WANTAM,” a shorthand for “one term,” and jeered loudly, effectively drowning out her address and forcing her to cut short her remarks. The hostile reception drew significant attention online, with the footage spreading rapidly across social media platforms.
Nyamu shrugs It off with Siaka
Rather than let the moment define the evening, Nyamu reportedly requested the DJ to play the viral Siaka song and took to the stage in high spirits, dancing and laughing as the crowd watched on.
She later downplayed the heckling altogether, drawing a comparison between the live reception and the kind of negative feedback she regularly encounters online.
According to Nyamu, the jeers did not shake her focus on the health issue that had brought her to the event in the first place.
The Siaka song has been trending heavily in Kenya in recent weeks, making Nyamu’s song request feel both timely and deliberate, a move many interpreted as a statement in itself. Watch the moment Nyamu danced after being heckled at KICC:
