A woman found selling illegal brew, bhang, and tablets of unidentified substances suspected to be narcotic drugs inside her house in Kasarani, Nairobi, has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges.

Ms Susan Wanjiru Kamau was found with 50 liters of Chang’aa, a local illegal brew, 40 rolls of bhang, and 30 tablets of a substance suspected to be a narcotic substance at her house in Marurui village.

Ms Kamau was arrested by the Police on September 22, 2023, after the area assistant chief received information she was selling the prohibited substances to members of the public.

The administrator led officers from the Marurui police post to her house where she was arrested and the substances recovered.

The 71-year-old was charged with trafficking narcotic drugs contrary to section 4 (a) of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1994, relating to the drugs she was found with.

Ms Kamau was to be charged with an alternative offence of being in possession of narcotic drugs in contravention of the same Act but the charge was shelved after she admitted the main charge.

She was also charged with possession of an alcoholic drink that does not conform to the required standards contrary to section 27 (1) (b) of the alcoholic drinks control Act of 2010 and she pleaded guilty.

Ms Kamau admitted the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti of the Makadara Law Courts and claimed she was doing the business out of desperation to fend for herself and an adult offspring she is taking care of.

The Chang’aa was not packed in 250 milliliters of glass bottles as required by the Act.

The tablets of the yet-to-be-identified substance were hidden in gumboots inside Ms Kamau’s house and police also recovered one kilogramme of leaves suspected to be bhang.

Two police officers including Inspector of Police Pharis Ndungu who led the team that arrested Ms Kamau were listed as witnesses in the case but they will not testify since the accused person did not deny the charges.

Ms Kamau will remain in custody until October 6, 2023, awaiting sentencing after prosecution avails the drugs in court as exhibits.
