An 18-year-old student at Turkwel Gorge Mixed Secondary School in West Pokot County became the subject of widespread admiration after a photograph showed a school official holding her two-week-old baby so she could sit her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations undisturbed.

The 2026 KCSE season opened on Monday, October 19, with oral and practical examinations getting underway across the country.

Amid the routine bustle of the national exams, a handful of extraordinary scenes emerged, and none captured public attention quite like the one from West Pokot.

A Village Rallies Around KCSE Candidate

The teenager, who had given birth just a fortnight before the examinations began, did not face the moment alone.

Her family, school administrators and a volunteer caregiver coordinated to ensure her newborn was looked after throughout the sitting.

In the now-viral photograph, a woman cradles the infant, wrapped snugly in a warm shawl and appearing fast asleep, while the young mother stands alongside her, having just completed one of her papers.

The image drew an enormous wave of warmth from Kenyans who saw it circulating online, with many saluting not only the young woman’s determination but also the community that surrounded her.

Nelson Opidi wrote:

“You had two main exams, 1 you already passed successfully, and the other might be quite challenging. So if you failed this, you have hope from your kid; he/she will pass the other one for you, and life will automatically change extraordinarily, but we are praying for the success of either of you or for your future child, coz two birds are not easy to follow!”

Shadrack Maritim added:

“Life is a journey and a lesson; let her stay committed and dedicated and focused on her exams. Education is Life changer.”

Mtoto Mpole offered a message in Swahili:

“Kuvunjika Kwa mwiko sio mwisho wa kupika ugali, Congratulation siz. Pia uyu mama mungu amubariki sana na amutie nguvu katika maisha yake yote pamoja na huo upendo forever and ever amen.”

The outpouring of support reflected how deeply the image resonated, with many readers drawing attention to the role the school and community played in giving the candidate a fair chance to complete her education.
