The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans to brace for above-normal rainfall between October and December 2026, cautioning that the expected rains could bring floods, landslides, damage to buildings and the displacement of families.
The warning was contained in a Facebook post published by the Kenya Meteorological Department on Monday, September 21, 2026, as the country prepares to enter the October to December (OND) rainfall season.
“Rainfall above normal is expected in several parts of the country from October to December 2026,” the weatherman said.
The department urged Kenyans not to wait until the rains intensify before taking precautionary measures, warning that failure to prepare early could leave communities exposed to the effects of heavy rainfall.
“As we head into the October to December (OND) 2026 rainy season, several parts of the country are expected to receive above-normal rainfall,” the department said.
The weather agency further issued a direct appeal to Kenyans, urging them to act before the expected rains turn into a disaster.
“Let us not wait for the rains to become a disaster. Prepare early and take action early,” read the advisory.
Among the major risks highlighted in the warning is flooding, with the department placing floods among the key dangers Kenyans should prepare for during the coming rainy season.
The advisory also warned of possible damage to buildings, raising concern for structures that could be affected by heavy rainfall and flooding.
Landslides were also listed among the potential dangers, with areas vulnerable to the movement of soil and rocks facing possible disruption during periods of intense rainfall.
The department further warned that some families living in areas exposed to flooding could be forced to leave their homes and move to safer locations.
The expected rains could also interfere with movement across the country, with the advisory warning of possible disruption to transport and essential services.
The warning comes with a specific call for personal protection, with Kenyans living in vulnerable areas urged to take steps to protect themselves and their property before the rains become severe.
The department advised Kenyans to avoid flooded areas and protect their belongings, while those living along river corridors were urged to move away from the danger zones.
“Protect yourself. Avoid floods. Protect your property. Move away from river reserves,” the advisory stated.
The warning therefore places particular emphasis on early preparation, with the weather agency calling on households and communities to identify potential risks before the onset of heavy rainfall.
The advisory was issued under the heading “Hali ya El Niño”, with the department presenting the information as an early warning ahead of the OND rainfall season.
