A lighthearted mealtime moment at a Kenyan village home has the internet in stitches after a little boy’s innocent confusion over lunch went viral.
Germany-based Kenyan influencer Annette posted an Instagram reel on Monday, September 21, filmed at her Homa Bay home, showing a casual family lunch of ugali, omena and cabbage.
The video quickly gained traction online for one very relatable reason: her young son Marcelo was convinced the round, white ugali sitting on the table was a cake.
“There is no cake, Marcelo. This is not cake, this is ugali,” Annette is heard telling him in the clip.
“But I thought it’s a cake,” the little boy replied, clearly unbothered.
Annette’s German husband Slavi also featured in the video, with his wife revealing he is not a particularly enthusiastic fan of omena, the small dried fish that is a staple in many Kenyan households, especially around the Lake Victoria region.
She served him a small portion regardless, alongside his preferred cabbage. To his credit, Slavi gave the meal a warm review, saying:
“Chakula nzuri sana,” Swahili for “really good food.”
Annette captioned the video:

The home-video style reel, filmed in a cosy living and dining area decorated with a Kenyan flag emoji overlay, captured the kind of warm, unscripted family energy that resonates deeply with followers.
