A burial in Kenya turned deeply uncomfortable when a grieving daughter used the occasion to publicly confront a fellow church member, accusing her of heartlessness during her mother’s final days in hospital.
Sarah Nunu delivered the sharp rebuke during the burial of her mother, Pastor Martha Sayo Nunu, stunning mourners who had gathered to pay their last respects.
Rent Demand Sent to a Bedridden Woman
Sarah told those present that while her mother was admitted at Kenyatta Hospital and could barely lift herself from the bed, she had been the one managing her mother’s phone.
It was during that time, she said, that a message arrived from a fellow church member asking the ailing pastor to settle the rent for their church premises.
“When mum was in the hospital, I was the one operating her phone. There was a woman who sent her a message: mum was admitted at Kenyatta Hospital and could not even get up, and that sister sent her a message,” she said.
Rather than ignore the request, Sarah said she asked her mother whether she had any money set aside. Her mother did, and the funds were sent across without delay.
What left Sarah visibly shaken at the burial was spotting that same woman among the mourners, weeping alongside everyone else.
“I asked my mum if she had any cash, and luckily she had, and we sent that money to her. Now I am shocked to see her here pretending to cry. Why are you crying?” she said.
Sarah did not stop there. She challenged the woman on the glaring contradiction between her absence during the illness and her presence at the graveside. The fare needed to attend the burial, she argued, could just as easily have paid for a visit to the hospital ward.
“You asked her for rent but now you managed to get fare to her home for burial, you are heartless and shame on you,” she said.
She also used the moment to appeal to those listening, urging them to cultivate empathy and to prioritise checking on the sick before making any demands or requests.
The confrontation drew mixed reactions online after footage circulated on social media.
