Thousands of Kenyans on Tuesday morning thronged Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi to celebrate Kenya’s 60th Jamhuri Day.

60 years ago, on December 12, 1963, Kenya became a Republic.

A number of dignitaries are expected to grace the national celebrations which will be led by President William Ruto.

Among the dignitaries is Ethiopia President Sahle-Work Zewde, who jetted into the country on Monday.

According to Interior PS Raymond Omollo, 30,000 people are expected to attend the fete at Uhuru Gardens, and parallel celebrations will take place in other counties.

Security along Langata road has been beefed up, and there is an expected closure of the Wilson Airport for 6 hours.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei earlier notified the public that Lang’ata Road will be busy and therefore urged Nairobians to use alternative routes to avoid congestion on the road.
