A Kibera court has sentenced a robbery with violence suspect, Samuel Macharia Muthoni Alias Samido, to death.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), on January 8, 2024, around 0620 hrs, at Kinyanjui Area in Riruta, Dagoretti Sub-County within Nairobi County, the suspect, along with others not in court, robbed Geoffrey Omweri Ontita of his mobile phone worth Ksh.23,725.

During the robbery, they physically assaulted the victim, hitting him in the face with a beer bottle.

According to reports, the complainant was opening a shop where he worked as an attendant when he was ambushed by a group of men who demanded his phone.

According to the investigators, he resisted, so they began beating him with strikes and kicks.

One of the men hit him with a beer bottle on the right side of his face, above the eye, causing him to bleed.

The complainant let off his phone according to probe; his workmate came to rescue him, but they also took his phone. He didn’t resist because his colleague was bleeding badly.

They screamed, and passersby heard them, and the men fled. The complainant and his colleague recognized one man who ran a pub near their shop.

The incident was reported to the Riruta Police station where investigations began.

The attack forced Ontita to give up his phone. Given the severity of Ontita’s injuries, his colleague attempted to intervene during the assault but was also robbed of his phone without resistance.

Their screams for help drew attention, causing the attackers to flee.

Both victims were able to identify one of the attackers as a local bar operator. The incident was subsequently reported to the Riruta Police Station.

The prosecution, led by Ms. Kathurima, presented a compelling case against Macharia, calling five witnesses to testify. .
