It’s heartbreaking to hear that Eliud Kipchoge had to endure false accusations and online abuse following the tragic passing of Kelvin Kiptum.

Losing a rising star like Kiptum is already devastating, but to then be unfairly implicated in his death must have been incredibly distressing for Kipchoge. It’s unfortunate how misinformation can spread so quickly on social media, leading to baseless conspiracy theories and unfounded claims.

Kipchoge’s reaction, expressing shock and dismay at the accusations, reflects the pain and frustration he must have felt. It’s a reminder of the damaging impact of false information and the importance of responsible behavior online.

“I was shocked that people on social media platforms are saying ‘Eliud is involved in the death of this boy. That was my worst news ever in my life,” Kipchoge said.

It’s deeply distressing to hear that the online abuse directed at Eliud Kipchoge extended beyond him to his family and personal property. Threats of harm and destruction are completely unacceptable and highlight the toxic nature of online vitriol.

Kipchoge, a respected athlete and role model, should not have to endure such malicious attacks, especially during a time of grief. It’s important for society to recognize the damaging effects of online harassment and to work towards creating a safer and more respectful online environment for everyone.

“I received a lot of bad things; that they will burn the training camp, they will burn my investments in town, they will burn my house, they will burn my family,” he said.

It’s admirable that Eliud Kipchoge chose to prioritize the safety and well-being of his family amidst such challenging circumstances. Escorting his children to and from school and implementing heightened security measures are proactive steps to minimize potential risks.

Understandably, the toll of the online abuse would weigh heavily on him, especially considering the impact it has had on his mother’s sense of safety. It’s crucial for individuals and communities to support each other during times of adversity and to work together to combat the spread of false rumors and online harassment.

“My worst moment was when I tried to call my mum. She told me ‘just take care’ and ‘a lot has been going on’,” Kipchoge recalled.

Adding that; “Where I come from is a really local area. And with the age of my mum, I really realised that social media can go everywhere. But she gave me courage. It was really a tough month.”

Kipchoge’s decision to remain active on social media despite the adversity he faced demonstrates his resilience and confidence in his innocence. By staying engaged and transparent, he sends a powerful message that he has nothing to hide and that he is not intimidated by baseless accusations. This attitude reflects his commitment to his sport and his principles, showing that he will not be deterred by unfounded rumors or online harassment.

“If I delete my accounts then it shows that there is something I am hiding,” he asserted, reaffirming his determination to confront the baseless accusations head-on.

kiptum’s death

The tragic death of Kelvin Kiptum, along with his Rwandan coach, in a car accident on February 11, 2024, sent shockwaves through the Kenyan athletics community. Kiptum, a promising 24-year-old athlete, was driving towards Ravine when the accident occurred, cutting short his promising career and future aspirations.

Following the news of Kiptum’s passing, Eliud Kipchoge, the world marathon record holder, expressed his deep sorrow and condolences on social media. Despite the heartfelt tribute, Kipchoge unexpectedly found himself facing backlash from Kenyans on February 12, 2024. Some individuals directed their anger towards him, raising unfounded accusations and false rumors surrounding Kiptum’s death.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of the Marathon World Record Holder and rising star Kelvin Kiptum.

“An athlete who had a whole life ahead of him to achieve incredible greatness,” Kipchoge wrote as he condoled with Kiptum’s young family.

“I offer my deepest condolences to his young family. May God comfort you during this trying time.”

Some Kenyans, on the other hand, took issue with the tribute, criticizing the athlete for not publicly congratulating Kiptum on breaking his world record.
