Two suspected thieves were on Monday beaten and left for dead after they were caught trying to break into a car in Kitengela.
According to residents – the two suspects had trailed a businessman who had reportedly withdrawn money at a bank in Thika – discreetly following him down to Kitengela with intention to rob him.
The suspects who were in a car — are said to have followed the businessman to a restaurant in Chuna area of Kitengela.
The businessman – oblivious of what was happening – proceeded to park his car before disembarking and walking into a restaurant to enjoy a meal.
It was then that one of the suspects left their car and made for the businessman’s car – at which point he started to break the window in an attempt to gain access and grab the money.
Attempt to break into the car was, however, foiled after a hawkeyed female security guard manning the restaurant noticed the suspects, and shouted at the top of her voice, alerting members of the public.
“I saw the man smashing the window of the parked car. I shouted at him and dashed towards the car as I wailed. It was then that the other suspect ran away, leaving behind his accomplice,” said the woman guard.
“However, boda boda riders who were around chased after the fleeing suspect and apprehended him, just before he could disappear into the crowds,” said the security guard.
Angry residents beat the two suspects, pelting them with stones and leaving them for dead.
Police from Kitengela station were called to the scene, and had a difficult time saving the suspects from the mob that was threatening to lynch them.
According to the police, the suspects were found in possession of an assortment of crude weapons, four identity cards, five mobile phones among other things.
The two suspects were taken to Kitengela police station, awaiting arraignment in court.
