Knowledge of Chinese language creating up prospects for Kenyans

In a shrinking economy where opportunities are becoming scarcer, how can you stand out in a competitive job market? A second international language could be the game changer.

For many years, French was the primary international language available for study in Kenya, alongside English. Some institutions also offered German and Arabic. The dominance of French was understandable, given that France had eight colonies in West Africa, making French a common language of communication across many African countries.

However, this trend is shifting across Africa with the growing popularity of Chinese Mandarin as a major subject of study. In Kenya, for instance, the government approved the teaching of Mandarin in schools in 2019 and formally integrated it into the curriculum by 2022.

Experts believe learning Chinese as an additional language gives learners a distinct advantage, both in the job market and in business. As the second largest economy and the leading manufacturing country globally, China’s influence is undeniable.

Erick Mokua, an aeronautical engineer and Aircraft Maintenance Technician with Kenya Airways, credits learning Chinese with changing his life. He received a scholarship from the Chinese government to study engineering in China but had to spend a year learning Mandarin since the course was taught in the language. Initially, it was challenging.

“But looking back, it was a blessing in disguise,” Mokua told *The Star*. “The language was a bonus because it has opened multiple doors for me. I not only teach engineering at Nairobi Aviation College, but the knowledge helps me be better at it.”

He explained that since many machine parts are sourced from China with manuals written in Chinese, his language skills allow him to better understand and operate the equipment. Additionally, he does consultancy work, providing translation services for those needing assistance with Chinese.

Mokua also works as a tour guide, particularly given the rise in Chinese tourists visiting Kenya. “You know how our economy is; you have to do more than one job. I work as a tour guide for Chinese tourists because I’m fluent in the language, and it helps me earn extra income,” he said.
