Police officers in Nyamira have apprehended the main suspect in a 7-hour armed robbery that left scores injured and property of unknown value stolen.
The suspect, Joseph Otieno Kevuva, was apprehended by detectives who placed him at the crime scene before tracking him down to his hideout in Kondele, Kisumu.
He was positively identified by his victims.
He is believed to have been part of a 10-man gang that staged a siege at a homestead in Keroka’s Kierira village, violently robbing, gang-raping, and gang-defiling scores.
“In the abominable incident that involved the attack of over 13 victims found within the homestead, assorted mobile phones, over Sh130,000 in cash and more hundreds of thousands withdrawn from ATM banks were stolen,” a statement from the DCI reads.
Among the victims of the marauding gang were a nominated female MCA, a principal at a local high school, a CEC in Nyamira County Government, a Kenya Prisons officer, and a nurse at Nyamira County Hospital.
Other victims included an 80-year-old woman as well as a college and a high school student.
In the ordeal that lasted from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on October 23, the gang is said to have subdued the victims with beatings and death threats before gang-raping three women and beating feet as dawn broke.
The victims were attended to in various hospitals in the county and samples taken from the sexually abused victims as probe into the incident intensifies.
