A group of striking lecturers at Machakos University took their protest straight into cyberspace after reportedly failing to reach a colleague who was conducting an online class despite a nationwide university strike.

Rather than waiting outside a classroom door, several members of staff logged into their colleague’s live Zoom session on October 2 and confronted him directly, demanding he dismiss his students immediately.

The scenes, captured in video clips shared online, showed multiple lecturers joining the meeting one after another to pile pressure on their colleague. The tone was blunt from the start.

“Who do you think you are? End this class right now; you cannot be teaching when everybody else is on strike. Can you award a degree on your own?” one of the striking lecturers said during the call.

Others quickly added to the chorus.

“End that class now, my friend; what image are you even showing those students that you are teaching right now? As if you will not benefit from the money we shall get after this strike,” they said.

The lecturer hosting the class remained composed. Acknowledging that his colleagues had made their point loud and clear, he responded calmly, noting that while they may not have been able to reach him physically, he had heard them.
