Magix Enga: I’m battling weed addiction, Bensoul is misleading the youth

Music producer Magix Enga has slammed Bensoul for his recent comments encouraging the use of marijuana and calling for its legalisation in Kenya.

Enga, who has struggled with drug addiction and depression, says Bensoul’s remarks on weed use are out of order, offering himself as an example of how marijuana took a toll on him.

“I used to smoke a lot of weed when I was running my Magix Empire studio to help me calm down and concentrate because I hated noise when I was making music. I saw Bensoul say that ‘weed’ is good, but for someone who doesn’t understand its effects, you’ll never understand it. I smoked a lot of it and weed is all about feeling sleepy all the time. The relaxation it gives you is nothing but drowsiness and if you smoke too much you end up ‘hanging’ (developing psychosis)”. says Magix, who currently lives in Eldoret and works at Big Afrique Studios.

During his abuse, Magix says instead of the focus on productivity he thought he would have when smoking weed, the effects were the opposite.

“I could master a song, something that would have taken me a day, I end up spending three days. Weed abuse turns you into a zombie, you smoke and just ‘hang’. People should stop telling lies that weed makes you sharper and more focused, it doesn’t. It’s not good at all,” insists Magix.

The producer went on to insist that most American idols who are known to smoke weed might just be doing it for showbiz.

“Look at someone like (rapper) Wiz Khalifa, I honestly doubt he smokes a lot of weed like he appears to. I mean look at how focused he is, if he smoked enough of it at all, he wouldn’t be great and focused at what he does. I think all he does is showbiz. It would be wrong to try to copy him,” Magix adds.

In a recent interview with Anyiko Owoko’s weekly podcast, Bensoul continued to express his support for the medicinal use of weed and his push for its legalisation.

“Whoever made weed illegal was doing it for political reasons and to oppress black people. Most countries have legalised weed because they have realised its value. Tumelalia pesa yetu (We have buried the opportunity to make money). I have never seen anyone go crazy because of weed and it has never been recorded. Most people who go crazy do so because they mix it with other drugs,” Bensoul said.
