Man fined Ksh.24 million for trafficking 266kg of bhang

A man has been fined Ksh.24 million after being convicted of trafficking 266.2 kg of bhang in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Vincent Odhiambo was sentenced to pay the Ksh.24 million fine or serve 10 years in prison if he fails to pay.

Odhiambo was convicted under Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Amendment Act, 2022.

In a post on X on Saturday by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, it said the prosecution told the court that on January 18, 2026, Odhiambo, jointly with others, was found trafficking 266.2 kilogrammes of bhang valued at Ksh.7,986,000.

The bhang was being transported in a Toyota Fielder along the Kapchorwa-Torongo Murram Road in Kamwosor Location, Keiyo South Sub-County.

Principal Prosecution Counsel Felix Namasake led the prosecution, which called six witnesses in support of the case.

The court found Odhiambo guilty after considering the evidence presented and subsequently convicted him.

In sentencing, the court identified the quantity of bhang involved as an aggravating circumstance, noting that the case involved 266.2 kilogrammes of the narcotic.

The court considered the mitigation presented by Odhiambo against the aggravating circumstances before imposing what it described as a deterrent sentence.
