Meru businessman, politician, and disability activist Michael Mutembei Makarina has threatened to pursue legal action against Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi if he fails to provide a detailed account of the expenses incurred by the assembly during the five impeachment motions against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

In his petition, Makarina invoked Article 35 of the Constitution of Kenya, which grants citizens the right to access information held by the State.

“Article 35(1) of the Constitution states that every Kenyan citizen has the right of access to (a) information held by the State; and (b) information held by another person and required for the exercise or protection of any right or fundamental freedom. Article 35(3) further states that the State shall publish and publicize any important information affecting the nation,” Makarina noted.

He is seeking a comprehensive breakdown of all costs related to the impeachment proceedings, including legal expenses at the High Court, County Assembly, and Senate, as well as consultancy fees.

“We also demand to know travel and accommodation allowances incurred by the Members of County Assembly of Meru sponsored by the Meru County Assembly to attend the impeachment motions at the Senate, administrative and operational costs incurred by the County Assembly, and any other associated expenses,” Makarina added in his petition.
