A 40-year-old man, known as MN, is facing detention throughout the year-end festivities after entering a plea of not guilty to charges of threatening to kill his estranged wife.

MN is accused of uttering the words “hautaona mwisho wa huu mwaka” to his wife without a lawful excuse.

The state prosecution office asserts that these words amount to death threats against the complainant, translating to “you will not see the end of this year” or “you will not live to see the end of this year” in English.

The suspect is said to have uttered the words to the complainant at her house in Dandora, Nairobi, on December 1.

He had allegedly broken into the house after she declined to open for him.

MN and the complainant have been married for over ten years and have two children but separated in July this year.

The conflict between the two individuals stems from issues of infidelity and has persisted for a considerable duration.

The individual facing charges has consistently asserted that he is not the biological father of one of the children, a 15-year-old boy, thus declining to provide anything for him, leading to the family breakup.

The two signed an agreement at a chief’s office in the area that the suspect would leave the complainant’s house.

After breaking into the complainant’s house, he allegedly destroyed household items before getting into the kitchen, where he grabbed a knife and allegedly told her that she would not see 2024.

She raised the alarm, and neighbours intervened and disarmed MN. He spent the night in the house and started causing chaos the next day, prompting the complainant to call the area chief, who ejected the suspect from the house.

MN denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi of the Makadara Law Courts until January 9, 2024, when bail and bond terms will be set after a pre-bail report is prepared by the Probation and Aftercare Services Department.
