A Kiambu family is preparing to bury five newborn quintuplets who died less than two days after birth, as grief-stricken parents Mercy Kanini and her husband Evans move to give their babies a dignified farewell.
Kanini was discharged from the hospital on Thursday, September 18, 2025, in an emotionally charged moment that her family had hoped would be a joyful homecoming.
Instead, hours after her discharge, she and Evans were seen alongside comedian Eric Omondi shopping for tiny coffins for the five babies.
Omondi, who has been vocal in rallying public support for the family, shared an update on the fundraising effort, revealing that well-wishers had contributed KSh 305,000 by September 18, while the hospital bill stood at KSh 228,000.

He warned that the family still needed further assistance as burial costs remained ahead of them.
“Send whatever you can to her number 0706 871527 (Name: Mercy Kanini). I am still Kindly Requesting Kenyatta National Hospital to please Waiver the Hospital bill for her. God bless you,” Omondi wrote.
He also confirmed that the family had settled on Friday, September 25, 2025, as the burial date, to be held at their village in Kuria, Migori County.
The family’s ordeal touched thousands of Kenyans online, drawing a mix of heartfelt condolences and sharp criticism over what some saw as inadequate institutional support.
