Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, along with Clifford Ochieng Ouko and Benjamin Onyango Odhiambo, has been granted relief as the court allowed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to drop terrorism charges against them. The trio had been arraigned at the Kahawa Law Courts in 2021 on charges related to the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.

Sonko faced allegations of recruiting unknown persons to commit or participate in terrorist activities and was also accused of possessing military attire intended for the commission or facilitation of terrorist acts. Specifically, on January 31, 2021, Sonko was found in possession of military gear.

His co-accused, Clifford Ochieng, was charged with possessing various military garments, including a NATO military combat short, a Super Sick military combat shirt, and a military desert camouflage uniform, all intended for terrorist activities. Benjamin Odhiambo faced charges for possessing a military camouflage jacket for similar purposes.

All three individuals had denied the charges. The decision to drop the charges provides significant relief for Sonko and his co-accused, who had been under scrutiny for their alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities.
