Murkomen reassures Kenyans of national security, warns against violent political meetings

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reassured Kenyans that the country remains secure, dismissing claims that insecurity has spiraled across the country.

Speaking on Sunday during an event in Kericho, Murkomen said security agencies had contained incidents of banditry and robbery, while dismissing concerns over the rising cases of political goonism in the country.

“I would like to assure Kenyans that the security of our nation is safe,” Murkomen said, adding that security agencies are well positioned to provide the public with comprehensive information on the state of security across the country.

Murkomen cautioned Kenyans against what he described as exaggerated accounts of insecurity, urging the public not to be misled by what he termed as false narratives.

“Do not listen to the narratives of people who lie and exaggerate. The country is safe. It has remained safe since Kindiki took over, and it has remained safe since I took over from him.” he argued.

The CS, however, acknowledged that isolated incidents of violence remain a concern, particularly around political gatherings.

He accused some leaders of mobilizing goons to political meetings and urged Kenyans to avoid gatherings where violence was anticipated.

Murkomen applauded the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja for putting measures in place to arrest suspected goons before they attend political meetings.

Additionally, he urged political leaders to always reconsider attending meetings where there are indications that violence or disorder has been planned.

His remarks come amid heightened concerns over political violence following clashes witnessed in Homa Bay. Ugly scenes rocked the Linda Mwananchi rallies in Homa Bay County on Sunday as one vehicle was torched, several people including journalists injured and 17 suspects arrested.

Murkomen said the security operation mounted in Homa Bay was extensive, but acknowledged the severity of the incident, noting that an officer lost his life during the operation.

The CS urged Kenyans not to attend meetings convened by leaders who operate with the goons.
