Mwenda Thuranira Explains Why He Splashed KSh 23 Million on Luxury Ride: “Open Doors”

MySpace Properties CEO Mwenda Thuranira has broken his silence on why he parted with KSh 23 million for a brand new Land Rover Defender, and his reasoning goes well beyond simply wanting a flashy car.

The Kenyan real estate businessman addressed the question head-on in a Facebook post on Saturday, September 19, after many of his followers had been curious about the eye-catching purchase.

Why did Mwenda Thuranira buy an expensive car?

Mwenda acknowledged that class plays a role in his world, but was quick to point out that in business, what you drive can carry real weight.

“When you’re in the hustle and business world, what you drive can also open doors. Sometimes, the machine you arrive in can start conversations, create connections, and even get you into rooms where big deals happen,” he wrote.

He also noted that perceptions matter, adding that people often judge others by the cars they drive, a reality he says shaped part of his thinking.

However, the story does not end there. Mwenda revealed that owning the Defender led to something he did not initially plan for: a community.

After noticing that several of his friends also owned Land Rover Defenders, the group began connecting naturally, sharing road trips and experiences that eventually evolved into something more structured.

From those organic meetups, Mwenda launched Defender 254, a network built around shared interests rather than formal boardroom settings.

He described it as:

“A new way of building networks, not necessarily in offices, but on the road, through shared experiences, adventure, business, friendship, and purpose.”

He used the post to call on other Land Rover Defender owners across Kenya to join the growing community, promising opportunities for travel, networking, and collaboration.
