Nairobbery: Gang member who was captured on viral mugging video arrested

Detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday arrested a member of a gang that was captured on a CCTV footage stealing from a foreigner along Ngong Road.

The suspect was nabbed by the sleuths who were tasked with carrying an operation aimed at nabbing the gang which usually operates within the city.

In a statement, the DCI said the gang has its base around Mogas Petrol Station along Jogoo Road in Nairobi County.

“One suspect in a viral robbery incident that was captured on CCTV footage along Ngong Road is in police custody following a sting operation by detectives,” the DCI said in a statement.

In the footage which has been making rounds on social media, a suspect was captured violently taking a sling bag from the foreigner before jumping into a motorbike that sped towards Dagoretti Corner.

It is then that a multi-agency team was formed and tasked with going after the gang since it seemed to be operating in a well-coordinated manner.

According to the DCI, the suspect in custody has already named the other members of the gang.

“His accomplices have since been identified and put on police radar as their manhunt continues,” the DCI said.

Cases of mugging in Nairobi gave been on the rise in recent days, especially during the weekends.

Several cases have been reported of members of the public being attacked and robbed of valuables including cameras, mobile phones and money.

Nairobi County police boss Mr Adamson Bungei said police officers have been deployed in various parts of the city to deal with the menace.

“Any form of criminal activities will not be tolerated within the city and everyone should go on with their business as usual,” he said.
