A Nairobi court has allowed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to recognize and enforce two arrest warrants issued by a United Kingdom court against Kenyan national Brian Kiprop Kiplagat, marking a key step in extradition proceedings seeking to have him returned to the UK to face serious criminal charges.
Appearing before the Milimani Law Courts, the prosecution told the court that the United Kingdom is seeking Kiplagat’s extradition to answer charges of murder, manslaughter, perverting the course of justice, and fraud by false representation.
The DPP applied for the endorsement of two warrants of arrest issued by the Westminster Court in the United Kingdom, enabling them to take legal effect in Kenya under the country’s extradition laws.
Magistrate Bosibori Nyangema allowed the application, clearing the way for the extradition process to proceed in accordance with Kenyan law and international legal cooperation frameworks.
The prosecution also successfully opposed Kiplagat’s release on bail, arguing that he should remain in custody as the extradition proceedings continue.
The court ordered that the suspect be remanded pending a further hearing on Monday, June 29, 2026, when additional directions on the extradition request will be issued.
The extradition proceedings are part of legal cooperation between Kenya and the United Kingdom, with the Kenyan courts expected to determine whether Kiplagat should be surrendered to the UK to stand trial on the offences listed in the extradition request.
