Nairobi Man Secures Denmark Visa after Embassy Scare Over Shortcut in Bank Documents

A Nairobi TikToker named Daniel Shirima had what should have been a straightforward visa journey to Denmark collapse into a sweaty, heart-pounding embassy standoff, all because he let panic steer her into a shortcut he quickly came to regret.

Shirima had received a genuine invitation from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with his accommodation and the bulk of his travel arrangements already settled.

Document Agent Made Things Worse

The problem was his bank statement, which reflected very little activity because, like many Kenyans, he primarily transacted through M-Pesa rather than a traditional bank account.

Feeling the pressure of wanting everything to appear perfect on paper, Shirima turned to an agent who assured him the embassy would never actually contact his bank.

Armed with that reassurance, he walked into the embassy and submitted his documents.

‎The teller went through the file, then slid a form across the counter asking Shirima to fill in his bank details and sign a consent allowing the embassy to call her bank directly.

Second Chance, Cleaner Application

He tried ringing both the agent who had worked on his paperwork and the original contact who had given him the all-clear. Nobody picked up.

Standing at the counter, he decided that walking away would look far more suspicious than staying put, so he signed the form and braced himself for the worst.

The officer, however, did not get to the bank call. Instead, she flagged missing hotel booking confirmations and handed every document back to Shirima, instructing him to sort the paperwork and rebook the appointment.

‎That moment of being sent home turned out to be the second chance Shirima had not expected.

Lessons From Visa Moment

He went back with a genuine one-month bank statement, no agent involvement, and a complete file. The visa came through.

“Sometimes when we feel like we’ve run out of options, we start doing things we wouldn’t do normally. We panic. We look for shortcuts. We stop trusting God,” he said.

Reflecting on the experience, he added that the ordeal reminded him he did not have to compromise himself simply out of fear. He closed with a direct word of caution to fellow travellers:

“Please, use your bank account. Don’t be like me. And remember your bank statement when you suddenly need a visa.”

His story has resonated with Kenyans who frequently navigate the anxiety of visa applications, particularly those whose financial activity runs almost entirely through mobile money rather than conventional bank accounts.
