A mother in Molo, Nakuru County, is speaking out following the devastating loss of her daughter, 18-year-old Joy Wangui, who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend in circumstances that have since drawn the attention of DCI detectives.

Wangui, a Form Four student at Molo Secondary School who was preparing to sit her 2026 KCSE examinations, was found dead in Kiambaa, Moto Location.

Investigators recovered multiple weapons at the scene, believed to have been used in the attack.

Walter Kipkoech, 23, whom detectives believe was Wangui’s boyfriend, was subsequently tracked to a hideout in Lagwenda, Kuresoi North, and arrested.

At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a blood-stained boxer, a white T-shirt with the deceased’s name printed at the hem, and black jeans bearing visible dry blood stains, according to the DCI.

Joy’s mother, Trizah Wairimu, described her daughter as her firstborn child and said the loss has left the entire family shattered.

“I was not around when she was killed; I only returned later to find out what happened,” Wairimu said.

She acknowledged that she had been aware of her daughter’s relationship with Kipkoech but said the family had not waited to act, having filed a report with both the police and the area chief over concerns about the relationship.

“As a parent, I would love justice for my daughter; no one deserves to die because of love. My daughter was a bright student at Molo Secondary; she was to sit for the 2026 KCSE this year,” she stated.

Wairimu declined to go into detail about the nature of their concerns regarding the relationship but used the moment to urge young people to heed parental guidance. In her view, when a parent raises an alarm about a situation, it is because experience gives them insight that children may not yet possess.

Wairimu described Joy as a hardworking and academically gifted young woman, noting she had been achieving B grades and that the family had harboured hopes of seeing her join university.

“My daughter was a B student; I expected her to go to the university but now she is no more,” she said.

Kipkoech remains in custody as investigators continue the case.
