Kenyan woman Phyllis Wachira, whose painful battle with a rare facial tumour moved thousands of people across the country, has passed away.
Facebook influencer Nandwa Isaac broke the news on Thursday morning through an emotional post on his page.
“Phyllis is no more. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” he wrote, in words that quickly spread across social media.
Phyllis had become a widely recognised figure online after footage and updates about her condition went viral. She suffered from an aggressive and unusual growth on her face that severely affected her ability to eat and speak, and her visible pain resonated deeply with many Kenyans who followed her journey.
A fight that captured the nation
Over the months that followed, well-wishers, content creators and online communities rallied together to raise funds for her treatment. Several attempts were made to secure specialised medical care for her, though the road was far from smooth.
Nandwa, who had followed and documented her story closely, acknowledged the heartbreak of the outcome while also pointing to the obstacles that came along the way.
“It is painful when genuine efforts to save a life are overshadowed by controversy and conflict. Despite everything, may Phyllis find eternal peace, and may her family find the strength to bear this loss,” he wrote.
He also took a moment to honour everyone who showed up for her during her illness.
“For each and everyone who genuinely stood for Phyllis God will repay you,” he added.
Kenyans mourn a brave woman
The announcement prompted an outpouring of grief in the comments section of Nandwa’s post, with hundreds of Kenyans sending condolences to her family.
Many remembered Phyllis as a woman of remarkable courage who faced an incredibly difficult illness with quiet strength and dignity until the very end.
She leaves behind a community that rallied around her, and a story that reminded many of the power of solidarity in the face of suffering.
