New Zealand has added 10 metals and automotive trade occupations to its Green List, giving eligible workers a clearer route from employment to permanent residence.
Immigration New Zealand confirmed that the changes took effect on 18 August 2025 after the government announced them in June.
Ten occupations added to the Green List
The newly listed roles are:
- Metal fabricator
- Metal machinist (first class)
- Fitter (general)
- Fitter and turner
- Fitter welder
- Pressure welder
- Welder Panel beater
- Vehicle painter
- Paving plant operator
New Zealand uses the Green List to identify occupations considered important to its workforce needs.
Workers in listed roles may access faster routes to permanent residence than those employed in occupations outside the register.
How the Work-to-Residence pathway works
The pathway allows qualified workers to secure employment in New Zealand on a work visa before applying for permanent residence after meeting the required conditions.
The new additions could interest skilled tradespeople in Kenya and other African countries who have experience in engineering, metal fabrication and automotive work.

Immigration New Zealand also introduced changes to the median wage thresholds that applicants must meet for some skilled residence visas.
