A South African woman has sparked a heated online conversation after sharing a glimpse of her private lobola negotiation, attended only by her parents and her partner’s parents.
Lobola is a traditional marriage custom in which the groom’s family negotiates with the bride’s family over a bride price, which is commonly paid before or as part of the marriage process.
The TikTok user, @nkolopk, shared the video on 7 October 2026, showing the negotiation taking place inside a home. Her caption read:
“POV: You had a private lobola with just both your parents!”
Woman chooses private marriage negotiation
The setup meant there were no aunts, uncles or other extended family members involved in the negotiations.
For some viewers, the arrangement was exactly what they would prefer.
They argued that lobola discussions are personal family matters and that the amount paid and other details should not become the subject of wider family conversations.
Others, however, felt that leaving out extended family could create problems later, particularly when families are expected to come together for important occasions.
One commenter mentioned hlaba larger family gatherings connected to major traditional and family events as one reason relatives should remain involved.
Netizens share their traditional marriage experiences
The woman’s video prompted thousands of reactions, with viewers sharing stories about their own marriage negotiations.
@Mandy04 supported the privacy but said some relatives should still be involved:
“I agree to the private thing, but at least involve uncles and aunts so the foundation of support is there. Remember, these people you will still need them ka ma hlabiso and big celebrations. Family needs to be there, and they might feel like you started alone, finish alone. No man is an island.”
Another viewer, @Sasitha🎀, shared a difficult personal experience involving her sister:
“I’m triggered 😩 my sister asked me how much my husband is bringing, then disappeared on me. I had to find someone on the street for the part where we go to the delegates covered in blankets. Let me go cry.”
@❤️K said her own family had handled lobola negotiations privately:
“Congratulations babe. My parents negotiated all my siblings’ lobola too, and they only negotiate with the groom’s parents, no aunt, no uncle unless the groom doesn’t have parents ❤️”
Meanwhile, @𝓟𝓱𝓪𝓶𝓮𝓵𝓪 was firmly in favour of keeping the process small:
“No uncles, no relatives, just parents? YES 🔥”
Another woman, @zanele mkhize, said she had deliberately kept her marriage private for years.
“It’s been 8 years; most people don’t even know ngiGanile [that I’m married]. I love it so much.”
@Zuri also supported the idea of keeping lobola negotiations within the immediate families:
“This is great. Lobola is private. No relative has any business in knowing how much your lobola cost and what was discussed.”
