The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has intensified enforcement against pedestrians who continue to ignore the Pipeline Transami Footbridge, warning that the practice puts lives at risk and disrupts the smooth flow of traffic.
In an update shared on Monday, August 3, 2026, the authority said a joint enforcement operation is currently underway at the busy crossing point, targeting pedestrians who fail to use the designated footbridge and instead cross the road at undesignated areas.
“Joint pedestrian enforcement is currently underway at Pipeline Transami Footbridge targeting pedestrians who fail to use the footbridge and obstruct the free flow of traffic. The offenders are expected to be arraigned in court this morning,” NTSA said.
According to the authority, those found violating the traffic regulations have been arrested and are expected to appear in court on Monday morning to face charges linked to obstructing the free flow of traffic and failing to comply with road safety rules.
The operation forms part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety in areas known for heavy traffic and high numbers of pedestrians. The agency has maintained that footbridges are constructed to provide safe crossing points and reduce the risk of road crashes involving pedestrians.
Authority urges safer road use
NTSA has appealed to members of the public to use designated footbridges, zebra crossings and other approved crossing points whenever they need to cross busy roads.
“The Authority urges pedestrians to use designated footbridges/crossings at all times as crossing in undesignated areas not only endangers their lives but also puts other road users at risk and disrupts traffic,” the authority stated.
The authority noted that crossing highways and major roads at undesignated points places pedestrians in danger while also exposing motorists and other road users to unnecessary risks. Such actions often force drivers to brake suddenly or swerve, increasing the chances of collisions.
It further warned that unsafe crossing habits contribute to traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, when thousands of commuters use Nairobi’s major transport corridors.
The agency reminded pedestrians that observing traffic regulations is just as important as motorists obeying road rules, adding that every road user has a role to play in reducing crashes and improving safety on Kenyan roads.
Focus on reducing road accidents
Road safety experts have repeatedly pointed out that pedestrian behaviour remains one of the contributing factors to road accidents in urban areas. Authorities believe consistent enforcement, coupled with public awareness campaigns, can encourage more people to use safer crossing points.
NTSA has in recent months stepped up similar enforcementexercises across different parts of the country as part of broader efforts to improve compliance with traffic laws. The authority continues to encourage all road users to follow the Highway Code and prioritise safety over convenience.
