The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has warned Kenyans against boarding illegal Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) during the upcoming festive season.

In a statement on Saturday, Samuel Musumba, the NTSA Manager overseeing road safety, noted that the festive season typically witnesses a surge in the demand for transport services which might prompt illegal PSVs to exploit the heightened travel demand.

These illegal and unlicensed PSVs, he said, may speed and fail to adhere to road regulations in a bid to meet the increased demand for transport services.

“We note that some passengers will find themselves using alternative means of transport in the event that they miss out on PSVs. This is okay but please be careful with the kind of transport that you will opt for,” said Musumba.

“Some illegal PSVs may take advantage of the situation and end up carrying excess passengers and operating on routes they are not licensed. Please do not board such vehicles.”

He similarly warned motorists against operating motor vehicles while intoxicated, labeling drunk driving as one of the main causes of road accidents across the country.

“Such behaviours will threaten the safety of all road users at this particular time. With this kind of awareness we expect passengers and motorists to be more alert and careful when travelling,” he said.
