A final-year nursing student identified as Mercy has reportedly been expelled from Madonna University’s Elele Campus in Rivers State, Nigeria.
Mercy found herself in trouble after a TikTok video showing students dancing in a hospital environment went viral, sparking concerns about professional conduct.
Mercy Expelled after TikTok Video Goes Viral
The video showed several students dancing inside hospital areas, with a caption referring to the presence of Gen Z students rather than patients.
The footage drew criticism from social media users, with some questioning whether dancing and filming such content was appropriate in a clinical environment where students are expected to observe professional standards.
Following the incident, the university’s senate reportedly expelled Mercy and suspended 14 other students who were involved in the video.
The disciplinary action has put the spotlight on the expectations placed on healthcare students, particularly when undertaking practical training in hospitals.
Appeals for Mercy’s Reinstatement
For Mercy, the reported expulsion could bring her nursing education to an abrupt end despite being in her final year.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) confirmed the disciplinary measures and appealed to Madonna University to reconsider Mercy’s expulsion.
The student body argued that Mercy should be allowed to return to university, complete her nursing education and proceed with her professional training.
NANS’ appeal has added another dimension to the incident, with the student’s future now at the centre of discussions surrounding the punishment.
Tuition fee for Nursing students in Madonna is around 1.5-1.8M per session. Social media will be the end of us because when the video was getting views on TikTok, the poster MERCY was asked to take it down but she blatantly refused. She knows her school regulates what students (especially MBBS, BNSC and PHARMACY) post online yet she did it anyway.

Social Media and Professional Conduct
The incident also highlights the growing tension between social media culture and professional expectations among students undertaking practical training.
While TikTok has become a popular platform for young people to share entertainment and everyday experiences, content created inside hospitals can raise additional concerns because of the sensitive nature of clinical environments.
For Mercy and the other students involved, a video that appeared to be a light-hearted moment reportedly resulted in serious academic consequences.
