Kenyan actress Nyaboke Moraa turned 42 on Sunday, September 20.
She marked the milestone with a raw, emotional message that stopped many of her followers mid-scroll.
What reflections did Nyaboke Moraa have on her 42nd birthday?
“42 years today… I never thought I would get here because at some point I wished to breathe the last,” she wrote in a Facebook birthday post, adding that while some people close to her have been a source of strength, others have actively wished her depression and even death.
“Good thing God does not come from anyone’s village,” she noted.
The post landed with particular weight given what Moraa has endured over the past year. In July 2024, she lost her firstborn daughter, Marrie Achieng, a blow that was quickly followed by the deaths of her brother, her grandmother, and her daughter’s father.
The succession of losses left her battling severe insomnia, and she has spoken openly about trying remedies including hibiscus tea and melatonin before occasionally turning to alcohol over weekends simply to get through the sleepless nights.
Her relationship also broke down during this period, with her former partner reportedly walking away because of the number of deaths surrounding her life at the time.
Moraa has described grief as a wound that never fully closes, saying she continues to relive the moment she discovered her daughter had died.
She has also faced criticism over how she has chosen to mourn publicly, but she has stood firm in defending her own process.
Despite everything, Moraa stepped into her new year with defiance rather than defeat. In the birthday post, she described herself as “fiesty, fierce, fun, full, funny, focused, fast and furious,” and signed off with a tender message to herself:
“Happy birthday gaidi mkuu, mtoto wa Rebecca na George.”
“I am stepping into this new year with a lot of positive mindset and anxiety for what is in store for me,” she added.
