Nyandarua MP has taken to social media to celebrate one of the most meaningful investments of his public life — the education of Mary Thuo, a young woman from Kianda village who has just graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry.
MP Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru – Ngotho first shared Mary’s story during his time as an MCA, after she emerged top of her class at Kianda Primary School and earned a place at Mary Leakey High School.
Sammy steps in alongside good Samaritans
Despite the academic achievement, her future looked uncertain.
Mary lived with her mother and three siblings in a single-roomed house, and the family lacked the financial means to pay secondary school fees.
Rather than watch her opportunity disappear, Sammy personally stepped in alongside well-wishers who rallied behind the young girl.
Mary pursues degree in Industrial Chemistry
Together, they covered her school costs and kept her dream of an education alive through secondary school.
That early investment turned out to be the foundation for something far greater.
Mary went on to pursue a degree in Industrial Chemistry, completing her studies and graduating with a BSc — a milestone that Sammy described as a source of immense joy.
What brings Sammy joy?
“Nothing brings more joy than seeing an education investment pay off,” Sammy wrote on Facebook. “Go conquer the world, Mary.”
The post, which closed with the Kikuyu phrase “KABA IHINDA RIA NGAI” — a blessing roughly meaning “may God’s time come to pass” — struck a chord with many who came across it.
Mary’s journey from a modest single-roomed home in Kianda to a university degree in Industrial Chemistry stands as a powerful reminder of what targeted support can do for a child whose circumstances might otherwise determine their ceiling.
