Veteran Nairobi rapper Octopizzo has opened up about his relationship with President William Ruto’s son, George Ruto.
The backlash was swift, with a section of Kenyans who have been questioning his loyalty to Linda Mwananchi, a movement associated with the opposition, and accusing him of being a government plant.
The rapper hit back on Homeboyz Radio’s 103.5 podcast on October 14, making it clear that his relationship with George predates any political tensions by a full decade.
Octopizzo and George Ruto’s pre-politics bond Speaking on the show, Octopizzo recalled that George had provided drone footage for one of his projects around ten years ago, well before either of them was entangled in political narratives.
“Alikuwa anashoot na drone zangu way back ten years ago, man,” he said, noting that the friendship was rooted in creative work, not political alignment.
He was equally firm that his own political identity has not shifted. He described himself as aligned with Linda Mwananchi and said his heart communicates through music, not through political manoeuvring.
“Politics is an interesting game,” he said, adding that he simply went to Siaya to perform, delivered his set, and left.
Cancel Culture will not stick, says Octopizzo
The rapper was unbothered by the Twitter pile-on that followed. He pointed out that cancel culture had tried to come for him before and failed, arguing that the noise died down within two weeks as timelines moved on.
“Cancel culture can’t cancel culture,” he said.
He also distinguished politics and leadership, arguing that Kenyans tend to celebrate political figures rather than hold them to account as leaders.
In his view, a person can be a sharp politician while being a dismal leader, and the two should never be confused.
