Heavy rains and strong winds have caused widespread disruption in Mombasa and Kwale counties, leaving more than 100 households affected and triggering searches for a boda boda rider swept away by floods.

According to the Kenya Redcross, in Mombasa, at least 103 households were affected, with nine people displaced across Jomvu, Kisauni, Changamwe and Likoni, according to the latest situation update shared on Thursday.

Homes were damaged in Freretown, where roofs were blown off, while flooding was reported in several low-lying areas. Flash floods were also reported in Nyali.

The rains also affected access to health services, with Jomvu Model Hospital and Tudor Sub-County Health Facility reported inaccessible due to flooding.

In Kwale County, five households were affected in Lungalunga and Vanga.

Authorities said a search was ongoing for a boda boda rider who was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded bridge near Shimba Hills.
