A son in Punjab, Pakistan, has spent nearly a decade turning his mother’s quiet disappointment into one of the most remarkable acts of filial love seen in the region, planting over 5,700 trees across his small family home.
Mian Asghar Ali’s story began simply enough. His mother told him she wanted greenery around their house, a modest wish that he initially dismissed.
He told her there was simply no room, and left it at that. But it was what happened next that changed everything.
The Look That Changed His Mind
His mother did not argue. She said little, but the hurt on her face spoke louder than any words could have. Ali later recalled the moment to BBC Urdu, saying,
“When I looked [back] at my mother’s face, I felt a passion and urge.” That brief, wordless exchange became the seed of something extraordinary.
Unable to shake the image from his mind, Ali reversed his decision and got to work. In 2016, he began planting, starting small and making use of whatever space he could find.
Times of India reported that Ali made use of the courtyards, rooftops, corridors and unused corners; all became fair game. Slowly, his six-marla home in Pattoki, Punjab, began to change.
A Six-Marla Home Turned Miniature Forest
What began as a desire to honour his mother’s wish gradually became a personal mission. Over roughly ten years, Ali has cultivated and personally maintained more than 5,700 trees on the property, a staggering number given just how little land he had to work with.
By thinking vertically and using every available surface, he transformed a modest family home into what resembles a lush, living forest.
The project has not come cheap. Ali has poured nearly 14 lakh Pakistani rupees (KSh1,891,861) into the effort, covering the cost of saplings, soil, equipment and the year-round care that keeping thousands of plants alive demands.
Yet by all accounts, the investment has been worth every rupee. The man who once told his mother there was no room has since filled that same space with thousands of trees, each one a quiet testament to a promise he never formally made but chose to keep all the same.
