A Police Constable, his wife and mistress were arrested for various offences following a fight over an apparent love triangle in Mutitu, Kitui County.
The mistress, Mercy Mulei, is admitted in hospital as a victim of assault and rape, but also placed under guard by officers, as she is a suspect.
Ms Mulei had been detained at the station for assaulting and damaging the property of Constable Francis Katingi Makau’s wife, Anne Kasyoka, following a quarrel over the latter’s husband.
According to the Kitui police boss, Constable Makau yesterday removed Ms Mulei from the cells at around 5am and took her to one of the offices within Mutitu Police Station.
The wife, who had been wondering why the husband usually failed to go home, became suspicious and visited the station building but did not find Constable Makau. She however heard two people conversing inside one of the rooms.
She stormed the room and found her husband and female suspect half naked. She assaulted the woman, breaking her left thighbone, the femur.
“She pushed the door where she found them dressing up and attacked the prisoner (Mulei) using a heavy stick where she sustained head injuries and suspected fracture on her left femur,” a police report reads.
Constable Makau and his wife were placed in custody for the offences of rape and serious assault, respectively, while Ms Mulei was rushed to hospital where she is admitted but under guard. She is a victim of rape and assault but also a suspect of malicious damage.
Constable Makau is said to have made his move after his colleague PC Ali Abdi had gone to answer a nature call.
Another officer, Constable Jacinta Kaluki said they only learnt of the incident when they heard the female prisoner screaming from one of the offices at the station at around 5.30am.
“The officers rushed to the office where they established Constable Makau’s wife, Anne Kasyoka 27, had assaulted Mercy Mulei. It is said Constable Makau had on several occasions failed to go back to his house,” the report reads.
“She pushed the door open and found them half naked and attacked the prisoner with a stick. She sustained head injuries and suspected fracture of her left femur. She was rushed to Mutitu Sub-County hospital for treatment,” the police boss said.
Under Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act, a person commits rape if he or she unlawfully commits an act which causes penetration without the other’s consent.
