In a statement issued Monday, police said the heightened measures are aimed at controlling both human and vehicular movement within the city on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, as the country marks Saba Saba, a day historically associated with pro-democracy demonstrations dating back to 1990.
The police noted that previous editions of the commemoration have witnessed breaches of peace by some members of the public, disrupting normal business operations for Nairobi residents and traders not involved in the demonstrations.
“As a security measure, there will be enhanced police checkpoints on various roads within Nairobi city tomorrow, 7 July 2026, to control both human and vehicular movement,” the police statement read in part.
The service urged members of the public to cooperate with officers manning the checkpoints, warning that any unlawful conduct during the period will be dealt with decisively.
“Members of the public are urged to obey and cooperate with the National Police Service to ensure that peace and order prevail. Any unlawful acts shall be met with the full force of the law,” police said.
