Police lob teargas to disperse Maina Njenga’s supporters at DCI headquarters

Police on Thursday, May 25, were forced to lob teargas to disperse hundreds of Kenyans who had camped outside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi in solidarity with former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.

Maina had been asked to present himself at the DCI headquarters on Thursday morning for grilling after recording a statement at DCI Nakuru where he was accompanied by his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru.

This was after he was found in possession of two firearms and at least 90 rolls of bhang following a raid in his home in Ngomongo, Bahati.

Also, present at the DCI offices were NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua and her Roots Party counterpart George Wajackoyah among others.

In a statement, DCI said the items were recovered during a raid conducted at Ngomongo village in Dundori ward, where eight suspects aged between 37 and 54 were arrested.

The officers said they also recovered three rounds of ammunition hidden in one of the rooms in the home

“One of the firearms recovered was a homemade pistol capable of firing while the other one was a Tokarev whose serial number had been defaced,” DCI said.
