A dormitory housing over 80 students was destroyed by fire at Highway Secondary in Nairobi. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the Wednesday night incident.
Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei mentioned that the fire left many students in distress.
“The biggest dormitory at the school was burnt down. We suspect arson but investigations are ongoing to get more information,” he said.
The Nairobi County fire brigade arrived promptly and helped contain the blaze. Affected students were relocated to alternative accommodations. Police and other experts visited the school on Thursday to continue the investigation, and the school’s management held a meeting to discuss the next steps.
In a separate incident in Lungalunga, Kwale County, a motorist’s car, along with seven sacks of charcoal it was carrying, was burned to ashes. The motorist had parked his Toyota Probox at Juakali Market and returned home, only to be alerted later by neighbors that his vehicle was on fire.
Despite local efforts to extinguish the flames, the car was completely destroyed. Police suspect that the fire was caused by hot charcoal carried in the vehicle. The vehicle’s wreckage was towed to the station for further investigation.
Additionally, police in Narok town are investigating an arson incident at a carwash yard where two machines were destroyed.
The yard’s owner reported closing the business on Tuesday and later receiving a call that it was on fire. Upon investigation, police found that a 40-foot container had been set ablaze by unknown individuals, destroying two washing machines and various items. Police are treating the incident as arson and are continuing their investigation.
