Today, five police officers suspected of aiding the escape of Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, Nairobi’s Kware serial killer, and 12 other suspects from the Gigiri Police Station will learn whether they will be detained for 14 days as requested by the investigating officer.
The officers—Ronald Babo, Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, Zachary Nyabuto, and Gerald Mutuku—were brought before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi. The magistrate is considering a request for their continued detention while investigations into their alleged involvement in the escape are completed.
Inspector Benedict Kaulu, who is attached to the Gigiri Police Station and works with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), has requested the detention to finalize the investigation into the officers’ roles in the escape of the 13 suspects.
The officer told the court that the five officers were on duty when the remandees escaped from custody.
“Babo was the duty NCO, Kipkirui cell sentry, Achieng and Nyabuto were guarding the station while Mutuku was the report office personnel,” Kaulu told the magistrate.
The officer reported that investigations are ongoing but not yet complete. Statements have been recorded from over five witnesses, and the mobile phones of the suspects have been submitted to the Cyber-Crime Unit at the DCI Headquarters for further analysis. Additionally, CCTV footage has been collected and is undergoing examination, with the report still pending.
The officer argued for the detention of the suspects, citing the presence of additional accomplices who remain at large. He emphasized that the suspects’ release could hinder efforts to apprehend these individuals. He requested that the suspects be held at Spring Valley Police Station, Runda Police Station, and Parklands Police Station in Nairobi to allow for the completion of the investigation.
Magistrate Martha Nanzushi acknowledged the gravity of the situation and decided to adjourn the case until today to rule on the detention request.
This decision follows the suspects’ arrest on Tuesday after the escape of 13 detainees, including 12 Eritrean nationals and the Kware serial killer, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, from the Gigiri Police Station cells under the officers’ supervision. Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, who visited the station on Tuesday, reported that preliminary investigations suggest the escape was facilitated by insiders.
“I have interdicted eight officers who were on duty that night including the Gigiri sub-county police commander, OCS, duty officer, station guards and report office personnel,” Masengeli said.
