Detectives in Nairobi have opened an investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of a police officer after he collapsed and died as he waited to board a bus in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Police said Constable Joshua Apella Odwar, attached to Ruai Police Station, was waiting to board a bus when he collapsed and died over the weekend.

The deceased is said to have been traveling to Kisumu after being discharged from Reale Hospital in Utawala, where he had been admitted following a hit-and-run accident.

However, according to hospital records, it was discovered that he had been referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for further treatment.

The body had visible injuries to the left leg and was taken to Chiromo morgue for autopsy. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, police said.

Meanwhile, in a bizarre incident, police are investigating the circumstances of how a 24-year-old woman drowned under a culvert of a drainage outside Kileleshwa police station, Nairobi.

According to a police report, a businessman claimed that he was standing outside the police station on 11 January when he noticed the body of a woman drowning in the culvert that forms part of a tunnel along Mandera Road.

Police say that he raised the alarm, and locals with police rushed to the rescue of the woman identified as Immaculate Atieno in vain.

The body was later moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

The police said they had been baffled and couldn’t understand how the woman could have drowned there.

The team investigating the tragedy said they wanted to understand if the woman had other past illnesses that may have led to the drowning.
