Leaders from Elgeyo Marakwet have called on ODM leader Raila Odinga to facilitate the return of exiled former IEBC commissioner Irene Masit. The appeal was made during the funeral of Masit’s father, Mzee Chirchir Masit, in Chepkorio, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Politician Micah Kigen, a friend of the deceased’s family, expressed the request directly to Odinga.

“Our ODM leader, we know you have all the details about what transpired with the Cherera four during the elections, and you know where Irene Masit is currently,” Kigen stated.

He urged that since Raila is now collaborating with President William Ruto, they should work together to ensure Masit’s return.

Kigen emphasized that as an IEBC commissioner, Masit exercised her democratic rights and deserves assistance in returning home. This sentiment was echoed by former MPs Daniel Rono and Jackson Kipatunui, who also advocated for her return.

Rono remarked that there was nothing serious regarding Masit’s departure and that she should feel free to come back. “Nobody actually chased her away, and we believe she is just out for a visit and would return,” he said.

Masit left the country following disputes over the results of the last elections. Mzee Masit will be laid to rest without his daughter present. Kigen concluded, “She is not here to bury her father, but we plead that she be helped to return home.”
