Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwour, popularly known as Jalang’o, has paid an emotional tribute to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as Kenya marks one year since his death.

In a moving message shared on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Jalang’o reflected on the pain of losing the veteran politician, saying his memory continues to live on among Kenyans.

Under the title Black Wednesday, the MP described the day of Raila’s death as one that many people would never forget, noting that the pain of losing him remained even a year later.

“BLACK WEDNESDAY, Black Wednesday, it was, a day we’ll never forget, a death nobody wanted to believe, a pain we can’t forget. One year later, the tears still fall, and the name of Baba still echoes through us all,” Jalango wrote.

“You left us in sorrow, but your legacy stays, a voice of the people that time won’t erase. Forever our Baba, forever in our hearts, Lala salama, Raila. Your spirit never departs.”

Jalang’o’s tribute highlighted the continued affection for Raila, who was popularly known as Baba and remained a significant figure in Kenya’s political history.

Raila’s first death anniversary

The tribute comes as Kenyans commemorate the first anniversary of Raila’s death on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

Raila died in India on October 15, 2025, aged 80, while receiving medical treatment.

Family members, political leaders and supporters are expected to gather at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, for the main memorial event.

The commemoration is part of a three-day programme running from October 13 to 15, celebrating Raila’s life, public service and political legacy.

Activities have included an intergenerational dialogue in Kisumu, bringing together elders, young people, women and religious leaders to reflect on his contribution to Kenya’s political development.

On Wednesday, October 14, Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, led a candle-lighting ceremony at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo as family members and supporters remembered the former prime minister.
